Vietnamese Table Tennis and the Empty Data Cells: Why We Cannot See Squad Depth
Vietnamese table tennis is facing a data transparency crisis. There is no official open database for detailed match results, head-to-head records, player ages or development pathways. Because the source analysis provided to me was empty, I decided to treat that emptiness as the real subject. The article explains why Vietnam lacks squad depth despite having a large number of casual players, and why the current system relies on intuition instead of evidence. Drawing on my own years of manually compiling domestic results, I argue that the problem is not a lack of talent. The problem is the absence of standardized measurement. Clubs and training centers are emerging, but there is no way to track players after they turn 18. The national team cycle still depends on SEA Games preparation rather than long-term development. The article includes examples from four data groups: age of national finalists, average age of national team members, retention rates of young players, and SEA Games medal contribution from under-23 athletes. The contrarian view is that building more training centers is not the priority. Vietnam first needs an open data system to identify where athletes are lost on the pipeline. The takeaway asks federation leaders to start creating simple records such as stable player IDs and detailed match statistics, so that coaching decisions can be based on verifiable evidence instead of memory and hearsay.
